BARBADOS

Excursion Day: Wildlife Encounter & Swim with Turtles

Booked Through: CheckMyTrip

Cost: $80/person

We arrived in Bridgetown, Barbados on the morning of the 2nd day.  After breakfast we grabbed our towels, exited the ship and found our transportation right where the CheckMyTrip itinerary told us it would be.  Once we were in the van we got a nice little tour of Barbados and some history from our tour guide. He even offered to get us anything we need including alcohol and weed. We declined. HAH.

Stop 1: Wildlife Encounter at Welchman Hall Gully

At the wildlife encounter we exited the van and climbed up to a peek where you could overlook the island and see the ocean.  We hiked around a little more and came upon some chickens and rabbits, which we tried to touch.  They also had this little play area with a sorry zip line, which we still managed to have fun on. There was also a little short guided hike through the gully to show us the native plants and foliage.

We did not see any green monkeys when we were getting close to leaving and we were kind of disappointed… then out of nowhere we heard rumblings in the trees and down they came.

It was pretty funny and entertaining to watch these monkeys fight over the food.  They would smell some, place it down, fight each other for different fruits and give each other sass.

Stop 2: Swimming with Sea Turtles – Carlisle Bay

At our next stop, we had about 1.5 hours of beach and snorkel time.  A few of us went out on a double-decker boat and it took us to a sunken “ship” (which was just an old metal ship liner) and then another area of the ocean to snorkel.  Both were close to the shore, so we weren’t too far off. Half the crew stayed on the beach (from a little too much sauce the night before) and the other half went snorkeling.  Snorkeling was ok.  We went later in the day so the water was a little more kicked up and not as clear as it could have been… I’ve seen more tropical fish elsewhere in the world and we maybe saw 1 turtle. You can’t make the wildlife come out anywhere and conditions always apply for what you may see. The sun, feeding schedules and everything make a difference.

(I lost all my GoPro footage for this snorkel)

We actually had more fun jumping off the boat and dancing on the upper deck.  This boat even had a water slide on it!

When we got back to shore, we found our friends and had one of the best beach days ever by just being stupid, stacking each other on shoulders, seeing how high we could stack and just being in the moment all day.  The water was immaculate, and the beaches were white sand. The part of  Carlisle Bay where we were at was part of an exclusive area, so that was a nice little caveat to this excursion.

The best thing to do is go with fun friends and lower your expectations.  You may never see fish or turtles but laughing with friends & getting slammed in the water from being top on the pyramid… is always a good time!
